This body of work could be called "intimate landscapes". It is a visual exploration of a subject, in this case, trees. It explores trees to present some of their beauty and uniqueness to the viewer in a way that communicates a feeling or effects a state of mind. I chose trees because of their structure, their color and the sense that each has a spirit. For instance, I wanted to capture the complicated patterns of tree branches against the sky, and make the most of the palette that this subject offers. At the same time that it is complicated, I attempt to avoid excess information. The viewer's eye is lead through the branches with just enough detail to identify the particular tree. In a way, it's like a portrait. For years I painted portraits and that connection with the individual subject has influenced my approach to landscape.
